Crafts : Nosebag

Summer is the perfect time for enjoy the great outdoors.  Whether you are going on a picnic, a hike or a jaunt to the beach, you will most likely be bringing food along so why not make everyone their own Nosebag (photo right) to carry their meals in style.

How did these colorful carriers get their crazy name?  They are modeled after feed bags that were hung from the neck of horses so they could put their nose in whenever they got hungry.

Although we don't recommend having your kids use them in quite the same way as our furry farm friends, they do make great personalized containers that go anywhere and hold a full meal.

Make them for each member of your family, and if you have older kids, have them pitch in with the sewing.  My Girl Scout troop made nosebags with minimal help when they were 9, but kids of all ages can certainly help with decorations on the white plastic.

Happy picnic!

SUPPLIES
24 oz empty white plastic bottle of bleach
Bandana
Hole punch
Embroidery thread and needle
24" of rope

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut top off bottle of bleach just below handle so you are left with an open "bowl".  Wash out well with warm soapy water until bleach smell is gone.  This may take a few washings.

Using a hole punch, punch holes approximately 1" apart all the way around the edge of bleach bowl.

Take bandana and fold one side down approximately 1 1/2 inches.  Sew this flap down creating a pocket which you will later thread the rope through. You can either do this by hand or with a sewing machine.

Now fold the bandana in half with the flap you just sewed on the outside.  Sew together at seam, making sure to run your stick close to the edge.  You will be left with a tube.

Turn your tube right side out so the flap and sewn seam are inside.  Fit this over your bleach bowl so that only about 2 inches fits over bowl.  Push rest of bandana inside bowl, so only the 2 inches of bandana are folded over edge of bowl.

Using embroidery thread, sew the tube onto the bleach bowl looping thread through pre-punched holes.  You can easily feel the holes through the bandana fabric.  When you are finished sewing around bleach bowl, secure by making a couple of stiches through fabric and securing with a knot.

Pull excess fabric up out of bowl.  String rope through previously sewn pocket.  Tie the two ends of rope into a knot, creating a cinch closing for your new nosebag.

Decorate the white part of the nosebag using permanent markers.

Pack a lunch and hit the road!
