Have your kids dress up your yard this summer with wood signs that give directions or announce your family swimming hole.
All you need to make these great garden signs are some plain wood plaques, available at your local arts and crafts stores. To add a little something extra to your signs, do as we did, and purchase pre-cut wood shapes as well. From there, give the kids some waterproof paint and let their imaginations run wild.
If you'd like an antique look, paint an undercoat in a contrasting color first. When you are finished with your topcoat and design, sandpaper the edges just enough so the other color shows through.
To hang your sign, attach two screws to the back side of your sign and then wrap a length of wire around the two screws. Use the same method with a single screw to attach your pre-cut shapes to the bottom of your sign.
This summer I'm going to have my kids make a sign for the pool ("Swimming Hole"), one for the vegetable garden, and another for the hammock ("Relax Here"). On second thought, what I really need is one that says "No Fighting!"
